Achimota residents demonstrate over worsening dumsor

Some residents of Achimota in the Greater Accra region have been demonstrating over a worsening power crisis across the country saying enough is enough. Carrying fridges, flanked by children and joined by some women, some young men clad in red bands say they have not had power for about one week.

The demonstration appears spontaneous. The national grid has lost 590 megawatts making renewed power crisis particularly painful.

The demonstrators including barbers and teachers and students say Achimota appears to have been worse hit in the region and want an immediate end to the trend.

A 13-year old student told Joy News Wednesday, “I don’t get anything to do my homework with so I wait till the next morning to do my homework”.

The lattern at home is no longer working. He says he is often late for school. The demonstrators have since beseiged the ECG office.

Although Ghana has been experiencing the crisis for the past three years, it appears the tolerance level has been breached as the crisis sinks to a new low.

The cause has been blamed on a lack of gas supply to power thermal component of Ghana’s power. It has also been reported that water levels in the Akosombo Dam is low despite the hope that the ongoing rainy season would have made a difference.
