Update: Petrol exposure linked to fatal fire outbreak; leaves three dead

A fire outbreak that burnt three to death at Daboya in the North Gonja Northern region has been linked to an unsafe storage of petrol.

The incident happened Saturday morning when chainsaw operators who lived in the five-bedroom house were handling petrol.

They were pouring the petrol not too far from a fire that was being used to cook, Damango District Police Commander, ASP Opoku Agyeman Prempeh told Joy News.

“One of them was cooking rice and the three of them were removing fuel. [They were] just taking it from a big tank to a small rubber [container]”.

Three had their bodies completely charred.

One person is in critical condition at the SDA Hospital in Tamale, Joy News regional correspondent Martina Bugri reported.

According to residents, they heard desperate shout for help around 8:30am and rushed to the scene.

Unfortunately by the time the got there, the fire had taken over the entire building. The North Gonja District has no fire service department.

Bewildered but helpless, people watched as the flames devoured the inhabitants.

The fire was later brought under control but the three men were burnt beyond recognition.
