Officials of the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards (PIPS) Unit have apprehended two constables for allegedly extorting monies from unsuspecting members of the public, most of them drivers at Tabora Junction, a suburb of Accra.
The arrested policemen are Constable Musa Azuma with Service Number 48572 who purportedly posed as an Inspector and Constable Faati Tinob Jacob with service number 48838 stationed at the Police Visibility Unit of the National Patrols Department.
Whereas Constable Musa Azuma, stationed at Aperade in the Eastern Region at the time of his arrest was said to be wearing a police uniform with an inspector’s lanyard and bars, Constable Faati Tinob reportedly donned his uniform and his accompanying rank.
They were apprehended on the night of February 18, 2016 at Tabora Junction by the PIPS team deployed to inspect and monitor personnel on duty.
Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, Superintendent Cephas Arthur, Director in-charge of the Police Public Affairs Department, said personnel from the PIPS were deployed to monitor their colleagues at their various duty posts as part of the reaffirmation of public confidence programme.
On reaching Tabora Junction that night, the team saw the two cops performing Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) duties.
Upon seeing the PIPS officials, the suspects took to their heels in different directions.
Constable Musa who was in the inspector’s uniform, was immediately arrested but Faati Tinob sped off using a motorbike with registration number M-14-GR 1594, but was later arrested, according to Superintendent Cephas Arthur.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Constable Musa Azuma was not an inspector as his uniform suggested.
When a search was conducted on the two, it was discovered that Constable Musa Azuma had an amount of GH¢82.00 and two Gota brand service radio sets on him while Constable Faati Tinob also had an amount of GH¢165 on him.
Investigations also revealed that Constable Musa Azuma, who was working in Accra, was on transfer to Akim Aprade in the Eastern Region to work but after reporting himself at his office, he returned to carry out the alleged nefarious activity.
They were later detained at the Nima Police Station pending investigations.
Upon receiving the news, Mr John Kudalor, the Inspector General of Police, ordered that the two be paraded before him for interrogations.
Upon interrogations, the police boss directed that their various houses be searched.
When the police conducted a search in Constable Musa Azuma’s house, they discovered a riot control amour vest, four pellet-proof vest, two driver’s licenses, a police camouflage with inspector’s lanyard, a pair of military trousers, two military caps, two military camouflage bags and a military pair of shorts.
The Police Administration has since interdicted the two cops pending further investigations.
Superintendent Arthur urged individuals who might have fallen victim to their activities to report at the police headquarters.
