The Duke of Cambridge came to the aid of the Queen’s representative in Essex when he took a tumble during a royal visit.
William and others rushed to help Jonathan Douglas-Hughes, vice lord-lieutenant of Essex, when he appeared to slip on the wet pavement.
The 72-year-old, who was wearing his ceremonial uniform complete with sword, fell backwards as the Duke was introduced to local dignitaries.
The Duke and Duchess had just arrived at Stewards Academy in Harlow when the mishap happened.
As Mr Douglas-Hughes fell backwards, a gasp went up from around 30 well-wishers as he landed on his back.
As William and others helped him to his feet, the Duchess of Cambridge looked on in concern.
As the Duke of Cambridge, second in line to the throne, checked whether he was alright, Mr Douglas-Hughes turned to William and said “Sorry about that”.
The Duke replied “No, it’s all right”.
William and Kate were visiting Stewards Academy in Harlow, Essex, where the royal couple are promoting their Heads Together campaign.
The academy is one of the schools supported by children’s mental health charity Place2Be, a part of the Heads Together initiative.
