The Police administration has announced a GH¢10,000 reward for anybody who would give credible information that would lead to the arrest of armed men who attacked and killed a police officer in the Sagnarigu District in the Northern Region.
A team of officers from the Criminal Investigation, Intelligence and National Operations Departments of the police have also been despatched to Tamale to support investigations into the murder of the peace officer.
This was contained in a statement released in Accra yesterday and signed by the Director-General, Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr David Eklu.
It said all regional commanders have also been directed to put in extra measures to ensure the safety of officers they deployed for duties as well as members of the general public.
On the instructions of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr James Oppong-Boanuh, the Northern Regional Police Commander, has appointed a family liaison officer for counselling services to the family of the deceased officer and the surviving officers of the attack, the statement added.
Attack
Armed men shot and killed a policewoman with the Northern Regional Police Command on the Tamale-Kumbungu road in the Sagnarigu District last Tuesday night.
The four men wore masked and were dressed in military camouflage matched with dessert boots on board a grey saloon car.
They absconded with two rifles, one belonging to the deceased police officer and a female colleague who stumbled and fell in her attempt to take cover.
Corporal Agatha Nana Nabin (the deceased) was with two other police officers on duty that night at a snap check point on the Tamale-Kumbungu road near the Star Oil Filing Station when the incident occurred.
Weapons
A source at the Regional Police Crime Office which confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic said at about 10:45 p.m. on Tuesday, a grey saloon car approaching the check point was signalled to stop, but the occupants of the vehicle who are suspected to be armed robbers got down and shot Corporal Nabin, killing her instantly.
The source said in her attempt to take cover, the other policewoman in the team stumbled and fell with her weapon, which was picked up by the men together with that of the deceased.
A third officer who had then taken cover fired at the robbers but they managed to escape in the car with the two weapons.
Assessment
The source said the Northern Regional Police Commander and other officers have visited the scene to assess the situation.
It said one spent shell recovered from the scene was suspected to have been fired from a G3 rifle.
The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).
Meanwhile, the police have mounted a search for the armed men.
Emergency numbers
The police called on any person with information to notify police stations near to them or call police emergency numbers 0299200331, 191 or 18555.
“The Police Administration further reassures all police officers and the public that it will leave no stone unturned to arrest the perpetrators of last night’s murder and such other criminals in the country,” it added.
