A 28-year-old man is in the grips of the law for allegedly attempting to kill his girlfriend for refusing him sex.
Micheal Commey, a drinking bar attendant at Kaneshie First Light in Accra, was reported to have attempted slashing the throat of his girlfriend with whom he had been in a relationship for nine months, with a razor blade but it was foiled by residents.
The suspect then attempted committing suicide, but was apprehended by neighbours.
The Kaneshie District Police Commander, Superintendent Francis Somain, corroborated the story to The Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday.
He said the victim had, for the past three months, refused to have sex with the boyfriend, claiming ill health.
Supt. Somain said at about 6:30pm on January 20, Commey invited her to his house at First Light, ostensibly to discuss issues regarding their relationship.
During the discussion, Commey locked the door and attacked her with a blade.
The woman’s cries for help attracted his neighbours who broke down the door, rescued and took her to the Cocoa Clinic for treatment.
He said Commey, realising the implication of his action attempted committing suicide by cutting his stomach and neck with the blade, but he was also rushed to the same hospital.
The police, who were informed about the issue, proceeded to the scene.
Supt. Somain said Commey, who was under police guard was responding to treatment while his girlfriend had been treated and discharged.
He said investigations were ongoing, adding that Commey would be charged for attempted murder and suicide.
