As the flagbearer hopefuls of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) continue to swell by the day, former president John Dramani Mahama has touted his credentials as the best ahead of the rest to lead the part.
About 13 persons have so far expressed interest in leading the party with political pundits expressing fears a large number of aspirants could further disintegrate the front of the umbrella family that is poised to come back to power in 2021.
As part of his tour of the Northern Region, the former president urged them to vote to mandate him to lead the party because he is the best to snatch power from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
According to him, he is the most experienced, has the qualities to unite the party and has the ability to go into the contest of 2020 to win victory for the NDC.
“All of you will come from your branches and will be given ballot paper….all those who are standing will have their photographs on the ballot paper to determine who amongst us you want to lead the party into 2020. At that stage, the only thing you have to ask yourself is who has the experience, who has qualities to unite the party, who has the ability to go into the contest of 2020 and win victory and bring it to us NDC. Once you ask yourself that you use your thumb and thumbprint the person. But I am sure that all of you are convinced that John Dramani Mahama is the best candidate to win the 2020 elections”, he disclosed to NDC branch executives in Savelugu.
He urged them to accord same courtesies to all the other candidates in view of the fact the contest is an internal one and they will need each other going forward after December 7, 2018.
“In December we are going for primary to elect a presidential candidate. I am not the only person standing, I have several colleagues who have also gone to file because they want to stand for the presidential primaries. It is a good thing because it shows the NDC is a democratic party. Our name is National Democratic Congress the “D” stands for democracy and democracy means that anybody who is qualified to stand for a position is given the opportunity to do so. It is an internal competition among brothers and we must handle it as a family matter”, he stated urging them to take part in selecting a presidential candidate as branch executives
Stressing further he said “these internal races for national executive and presidential primaries are a family contest… and so other aspirants will come round and want to meet you. If they come, you listen to them. There shouldn’t be any insults there should not be denigrating anybody. At the end of this contest, we all have to come together and win 2020. Let us not insult anybody because we do not like him. I believe that NDC will come back to do the good work it started”
