I fired gunshots at registration centre to protect myself – Hawa Koomson

The Member of Parliament for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Mavis Hawa Koomson has admitted firing gunshots at a voter registration centre in the area.

There was a confrontation at a registration centre in the constituency on Monday, July 20, 2020, which led to gunshots being fired and motorbikes being burnt.

‘None of my men had guns on them when we got to the center. I fired the shots myself,’ she said on Adom News.

Earlier Monday, officials of the Electoral Commission closed down the Step to Christ registration center in the Awutu Senya East constituency after gun-wielding men stormed the premises.

She added that the gunshot was a way of protecting herself at the registration centre since her police escort had not started working that day.

The MP’s action has since been condemned by sections of the public who are calling for her arrest and subsequent dismissal by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Mavis Hawa Koomson is a Ghanaian politician and educationist. She is the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East Constituency.She was appointed by President of Ghana Nana Akuffo-Addo on 10 January 2017 as Minister of Special Development Initiative.
