Commodities make marginal gains

Trading activities on the various markets ended this week with some changes in prices. An olunka of shelled groundnut gained 7 per cent to sell averagely at GH¢13.10.

The 5 kilo bag of Uncle Sam gained 4 per cent to close the week at GH¢28.50 with yam also gaining 4 per cent to close at GH¢4.50. The lowest gain was made by gari and local rice (white), with both gaining a percentage point to close at GH¢3.90 per olunka and GH¢7.20 per olunka. Tomatoes and Soya beans however lost 3 and 2 per cent respectively to close the week at GH¢10.93 and GH¢6.60.

The prize of maize remained unchanged in most markets. However, the commodity went for GH¢4.60 losing 3 percentage points in Kumasi.

The price of a “medium size tomato tin” full of fresh tomatoes lost 20 per cent in Accra to close the week at GH¢10.50. Kumasi also saw a loss of 20 per cent to close the week at GH¢5.20, with Techiman losing 4 per cent to close the week at GH¢10.10. The commodity made gains at Tamale and Takoradi, with Tamale gaining 4 per cent to close the week at GH¢9.40 and Takoradi gaining 10 per cent to close the week at GH¢19.80 from a previous price of GH¢18.00.

Maize

Maize didn’t have a lot of activity this week as most markets recorded a stable price. A 100kg bag of maize lost a percentage point in Kumasi to close the week at GH¢148.00 from a previous price of GH¢150.00. On the retail market, a kilo of maize went for GH¢1.75 loosing 3 percentage points.

Tomato (Fresh)

A crate of tomatoes traded mix on the market this week. A crate was sold in Accra for GH¢400.00 from a previous price of GH¢500.00, representing a loss of 20 percentage points. It also lost 11 per cent in Techiman to close the week at GH¢355.00. The commodity however gained a percentage point in Kumasi to close the week at GH¢213.00 from a previous price of GH¢210.00. Takoradi gained 5 per cent to close the week at GH¢525.00.

On the retail market, tomatoes lost 20 percent in Accra to close the week at GH¢5.83 from a previous price of GH¢7.32. Kumasi also lost 20 per cent to close the week at GH¢2.87, with Techiman loosing 4 per cent to close the week at GH¢5.60.

The commodity made gains at Tamale and Takoradi, with Tamale gaining 4 per cent to close the week at GH¢5.20 and Takoradi gaining 10 per cent to close the week at GH¢11.00 from a previous price of GH¢10.00.
