President John Mahama has reiterated the need to secure a private investor in the management of the Electricity Company of Ghana.
According to him, the current system at the power distributor has not been efficient and must be dealt with head-on.
Government is currently exploring investors to take over the management of the ECG. The Move has been informed by the company’s inability to remain solvent over the years.
However, the partial privatisation move being pursued by the government has been fiercely resisted by workers of the power distributor.
Speaking at the Africa Mobile and ICT Expo in Accra, Mr. Mahama said the decision to privatise the company is in the best interest of the nation.
“We have a very inefficient downstream distribution system on the electricity and power front. We are trying to do reforms and those chimeras are being drawn about, ‘electricity is so important that it must be monopolized by the state, why are you allowing the private sector in’. But we have had this system for years and it is not working; if it is not working you have to fix it,” the President stated.
