More than 60 local and international publishers and companies are taking part in the four-day fair, which is being held under the auspices of the Ghana Publishers Association and the Ghana International Book Fair (GIBF) Secretariat. The theme for this year’s international book fair is “Ghana: A nation of readers for development”, which commenced in Accra yesterday.

The President of Ghana Publishers Association, Mr Asare Konadu Yamoah, speaking at the event said that it is time for the developing countries to take part in empowering the needy, precisely territories to help the potentials of the citizens for the development of the landmass.

The President of the Ghana Publishers Association, Mr Asare Konadu Yamoah has charged developing countries to take an active role in providing the needed literacy environment to harness the potential of its citizens for the development of the continent. According to him, developed countries have witnessed an improvement in the quality of their lives as a result of their reading culture.

Mr Yamoah said this at the opening ceremony 18th International Book Fair held in Accra,Ghana “Developed countries are characterised with literate people who have the requisite human resources to create, innovate and devise suitable approaches to get things done in a progressive manner”.

According to him has redirected their focus this year to promote literacy among students from primary to tertiary considering the continuous decline in education and culture, according to the UNESCO (2019) report.

Touching on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, on the book industry, Mr Yamoah said the book industry in Ghana is exploring ways of integrating e-learning to harness the opportunities most countries in Europe and the USA have adopted in their business approaches.

The Country Director of UNESCO in Ghana, Mr Daillo Abdourahamane also hinted that plans of advocating reading as a national policy which we advocate reading as a national policy.

The four-day event is scheduled from 26th to 29th August 2021.
