Zoomlion marks World Environment Day with clean-up exercise

Integrated waste management solutions provider, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, has marked this year’s World Environment Day with a clean-up exercise within the Nmai Dzorn community in Accra.

A statement from Zoomlion to the Ghana News Agency explained that Management and staff of the company swept the surrounding streets, desilted choked gutters and drains along the school Junction road.

The statement said the exercise was supported by various waste management vehicles that collected the waste materials immediately it was gathered.

Mrs Gloria Anti, the Deputy Managing Director (MD) of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, who led management and staff to undertake the exercise, said the company as a power house for waste management decided to commemorate this year’s World Environment Day on the theme, “Beat Air Pollution” by cleaning its surroundings, the statement said.

She explained that it was important for stakeholders to mitigate pollution which had become a global canker due to indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and at unauthorised places.

She underscored the need to safeguard the environment from pollution as its effects threatened human health.

Mrs Anti, the statement said, bemoaned the rate at which plastics were disposed into water bodies, an act she said impeded aquatic life.

The Deputy MD was optimistic that the President’s vision to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa was achievable with the right attitudes anchored by the citizenry towards good sanitary practices as Zoomlion had already established all the scientific waste management infrastructures needed to attain the feat, the statement said.

Mrs Anti urged Ghanaians and civil society groups to positively contribute to the attainment of the President’s vision to make Ghana a tourism hub in Africa.

The World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5, every year to create awareness for the protection of the environment.

The event was first held in 1974 and has been a flagship campaign for raising awareness on emerging environmental issues from marine pollution, global warming and wildlife crime among others.
