The Yendi Municipal Police Command is on the hunt for about 10 young men captured in a video attacking an armed policeman.
The policeman is said to have been called to the chief’s palace at Sang in the Northern Region to arrest two persons who allegedly stole electric cables and were about to be lynched by the youth of the community.
In the 15 seconds viral video, some young men are seen heckling the armed policeman and attempting to snatch his AK 47 rifle and preventing him from rescuing the suspected thieves. The policeman is seen struggling with the youth, raising his rifle and threatening to open fire.
Daily View Gh has gathered that the incident occurred about a month ago and has since heightened tension between the police and the youth of the community as efforts by the police in the area to identify and arrest the suspected attackers have proved futile.
When contacted, the Yendi Municipal Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Peter Kofi Ayirezang confirmed the authenticity of the viral video and said the incident occurred on July 5, 2018.
He explained that the police officer stationed in the town was called to arrest the suspected thieves identified as Hamza Abdul-Rahman and Alhassan Haruna, but the youth who were bent on lynching the suspects heckled the officer and prevented him from doing his work.
According to him, the chief in whose palace the incident occurred has been served a notice to hand over the youth seen attacking the officer in the video while investigations were also ongoing.
