Work for peace like I’m doing – Mahama to Akufo-Addo

Former President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that he would continue to work for peace and urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his government to do the same as the country enters an election-year.

Mr Mahama charged Nana Akufo-Addo not to intimidate Ghanaians during the elections.

Mr Mahama said perpetrators of violence in the country should not go scot-free without being punished for their bad deeds, citing the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency by-election incident where the Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Mr Sam George, was assaulted by some national security operatives.

While a committee set up to investigate the matter found the perpetrators culpable, a presidential white paper on the committee’s report rubbished the findings, allowing the culprits to go scot-free.

In his 2020 New Year message, Mr Mahama admonished Nana Akufo-Addo to ensure that the perpetrators of the Ayawaso violence are brought to justice.

“As we go to the polls in 2020, President Nana Akufo-Addo has a responsibility to secure the safety of all citizens and must resist the temptation to allow the use of violence to harm and intimidate innocent civilians as we observed last year during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

“On my part, I will continue to work for peace and I urge the President to do the same. As a first step, I suggest he stops shielding the perpetrators of the violence at Ayawaso West Wuogon. He must have them face the appropriate sanctions,” Mr Mahama charged.
