President John Dramani Mahama has urged the newly appointed governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Abdul Nasir Issahaku to work closely with the Minister of Finance, to enhance the economic wellbeing of Ghanaians.
According to the president, government has already taken firm decisions on its fiscal policies and will require the central bank to consolidate the gains by making prudent monetary policies.
“It is my hope that you work closely with your colleague, the Minister of Finance to ensure that both fiscal and monetary policies continue to be on track”, he said.
The president made the remarks at a short ceremony held at the Flagstaff House to swear in Dr. Abdul Nasir Issahaku as governor of the BoG.
Congratulating him, President Mahama appealed to Dr. Issahaku to use his past experiences in international finance organisations to stabilise important macroeconomic indicators such as inflation and interest rates.
‘‘You come to the job with quite a lot of experiences from the African Development Bank among others. I am very sure that the responsibilities are not new to you,” he said.
He stated that even though the economic prospects of the nation appears very good; attaining a stable economy to create jobs for the youth will require a lot of hard work to achieve.
“It is going to put quite a lot on your shoulders, yourself and the minister of finance. I believe that working together, in terms of fiscal and monetary policy, we should be able to ensure that this economy grows even more resilient,’’ he said.
Dr Issahaku replaces Dr Henry Kofi Wampah, who retired at the end of March.
Until his appointment, Dr. Issahaku was a Second Deputy Governor of the BoG, and served on many committees including the Economy and Research Committee, Strategic Planning and Budget Committee, and the Monetary Policy Committee, of the BoG.
Prior to joining the BoG, he acted as the Chief Executive Officer of the Export Development and Agricultural Investment Fund (EDAIF).
He holds a PhD in Political Science and worked previously as a professor of political science at the University of Georgia, USA.
