Latest statistics available to reveal that women in the Ashanti Region have gained notoriety in the trade of illicit drugs particularly “wee”. The disturbing figures which have left many residents in shock is appreciating according security agencies in the Ashanti who are seriously battling with the canker.
From September 1 2015 to date, about 9 women have been arrested in the region alone in their attempt to smuggle these drugs to other parts of the country according ASP Jeremiah Alele Regional Commander of Drugs Law Enforcement Unit Commander.
Over the weekend another arrest was made involving a couple growing weed at Bosomtwi, a suburb of Kumasi. The couple, Kwame Adu, 39, and Margaret Kobi, 29, were arrested Saturday with bags of the dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp which was harvested from their farm.
The arrest was led by the regional Commander of the Drugs Law Enforcement Unit ASP Jeremiah Alale under operation ‘tracing the root’. A single barrel gun was also retrieved from the room of the suspected couple.
According to Police sources, the suspects confessed to the crime during interrogation and added that they have been doing the business for more than five years. Announcing the arrest to the media, ASP Alale said the regional police command is on a mission to rid the region of the drug trade and will leave no stone unturned.
