We’ll strike till the last person is paid – GNAT

The National President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Philipa Larson, has said the three unionised teacher groups who have declared a strike will persist with their industrial action until all of them have been paid their legacy arrears.

She told Kwabena Prah Jnr (The Don) on the Ghana Yensom show on Accra 100.5FM on Monday, 9 December 2019 that “even if it is one person who hasn’t been paid, we will continue to strike.”

GNAT, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT) began the nationwide strike today.

The three unions’ industrial action is in connection with the failure of the government to pay their legacy arrears.

They made the joint announcement at a press conference held in Accra on Thursday, 5 December 2019.

According to the unions, the arrears date as far back as 2012 to 2016.

Ms Larson said on Monday that “some have been paid, others have not been paid and, so, we are fighting for those who haven’t been paid. This is not a matter of publishing names. We don’t need the information; we need the cash.”
