Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives says it is not calling off its strike even as government has announced issuing over GH₵756,000.00 to pay all outstanding salary arrears owed nurses in Accra, Pantang, and Ankaful Psychiatric hospitals.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Health late Tuesday stated that the Controller and Accountant Generals Department had transferred to the three psychiatric hospitals in the country which covers the about 133 nurses who form part of some nurses to be paid outstanding arrears.
The Ministry of Health and Controller and Accountant General’s Department, the statement added, are keying in the inputs for payment of the rest of the salary arrears as the system has been opened for this purpose.
“This shows our commitment of ensuring that all outstanding arrears are worked on and paid in the shortest possible time,” the statement in part read.
It therefore called on the nurses currently on strike to rescind their decision and go back to work.
However speaking to Fiifi Banson on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.3 FM Wednesday, spokesperson for the Coalition, Douglas Adu-Fokuo stated that the group will continue with its strike until the monies hit their accounts, as authorities have failed them after making so many promises.
“We’re over 7,000 health professionals who were employed between 2011 and 2015 and we have waited for our salaries for too long a time. Even as government is claiming to have released some monies, that is not going to get us back to work, we’ve had enough of promises. They have failed us anytime they promised”.
