Two suspected thieves who are said to have specialised in stealing TV decoders at Baidan, a suburb of Berekum in the Brong-Ahafo Region, have been lynched and their bodies have been deposited at the Berekum Holy Family Hospital.
The incident, which happened yesterday at about 12noon, was said to have taken the robbers by surprise after they had allegedly stolen a decoder and fled with their booty. But a nine-year-old boy blew an alarm and the men were prevailed upon by a crowd and beaten to death.
One of them died instantly, whilst another sustained bruises and was rushed to hospital but also died later.
The third person, however, managed to escape.
According to sources, the syndicate came from Berekum and had been purportedly been stealing people’s decoders for some time now.
Their names were not readily available except their nicknames- Kwame Apontsey and Berekum Samini. Items like pliers, spanners and screw drivers were retrieved from them.
According to information gathered by DAILY GUIDE, one of them, before his death, told his attackers that it was some Baidan residents who informed them that the people had a lot of TV decoders and that during daytime most of them either went to farm or to work and so they should take advantage of their absence to steal their decoders.
They reportedly went to one house and met a nine-year-old boy and asked him to go and buy them sachet water. But upon his return, the boy discovered that the strangers were not there.
He went into the father’s room and realised that the father’s TV decoder was not there and started shouting, ‘Thief! Thief!’ It reportedly attracted people who combed all corners for them.
Two of them were later chanced upon and lynched. The Berekum Divisional Police Commander, Superintendent Asare Bediako, confirmed the death to DAILY GUIDE on phone but said nobody had been arrested as investigations were ongoing to arrest the attackers and bring them to book.
