The Supreme Court has struck out the National Media Commission’s Contents regulation law (LI 2224) as unconstitutional.

The said regulation required broadcast media houses to send their content to the commission.

But the seven-member panel in a unanimous decision held that parts of the regulation that required the media houses to send their content to the NMC amounted to censorship.

The apex court has therefore struck out regulations 2, 3,4,5,7,8,10,11,12 and 22 of the law as unconstitutional.

The court held that the NMC had the power to come out with guidelines but not one that required the submission of contents.
