THREE persons have been confirmed dead while several commuters at Piobo, a suburb of the Nsawam/Adoagyiri Municipality in the Eastern Region, have sustained various degrees of injuries following an explosion at an old quarry site.
The injured have since been rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
Other residents who managed to escape physical injuries have been rendered homeless while several properties have been destroyed.
Unconfirmed reports indicated that there was a dump container believed to contain some leftover dynamite which was used for blasting stones at the old quarry site a year ago. Some hunters who went hunting for grass cutters around the site on Wednesday afternoon reportedly lit a fire near the container, resulting in the explosion.
DAILY VIEW GH gathered that the Eastern Regional Police Command, led by the Deputy Regional Commander, DCOP James Abass Abaa, personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service and NADMO officials visited the scene to assess the situation.
According to reports, the dynamite exploded around 4:30pm, splitting and hurling stones unto houses, schools and farms in the Piobo community. A taxicab that was plying a nearby road along the quarry site reportedly had its windscreens smashed.
DAILY VIEW GH gathered that most drivers and passengers who were travelling on the road near the old quarry site abandoned their cars and ran for their lives as a result of the incident.
The Nsawam Municipal NADMO Coordinator, Mr Prosper Samuel Yeboah, confirmed the incident to
DAILY VIEW GH.
He noted that several commuters were injured and were rushed to the hospital while houses and properties were destroyed, adding that the incident made most of the residents to flee for their lives.
