President John Dramani Mahama wrapped up his three-day “Accounting to the people” tour of the Brong Ahafo Region last Thursday with a call on prospective voters to demonstrate their determination to vote in the November 7 general election by going out to register in the limited registration exercise.

The Electoral Commission (EC) last Thursday began the limited registration exercise to allow Ghanaians who had attained the voting age and those who qualified but could not register to vote in the last general election to register with the EC to enable them to vote in the upcoming election.

President Mahama advised students who had attained the voting age to register at centres close to their schools.

He said it would enable them to cast their votes on November 7 without travelling home as the election would be held at the time they were in school.

At separate ceremonies in Sunyani and Berekum last Thursday as part of his “Accounting to the people” tour of the Brong Ahafo Region, the President said it was important that every qualified person exercised his or her franchise in the election.

Activities

In Sunyani, the President inaugurated a Hospitality, Catering and Institutional Management (HCIM) building for the Sunyani Polytechnic, while at Berekum, he paid a courtesy call on the Omanhene, Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo.

The complex for Sunyani Polytechnic has laboratories, workshops, changing rooms and demonstration rooms among other facilities.

The building, whose construction started in 2004, was abandoned by the contractor.

In 2013, the GETFund took over the project to ensure its completion.

Technical universities

On the conversion of polytechnics to technical universities, President Mahama said it would address the problem of progression that graduates of the polytechnics had faced over the years.

He also said the massive investment taking place at the polytechnics was to position them for a great take-off as universities, adding that the HCIM complex, for instance, would play an integral part in the activities of the technical university in Sunyani.

President Mahama added that scholarships would continue to be awarded to the polytechnics to enable them to improve on their human resource.

He expressed the hope that the technical universities would go a long way to address graduate unemployment as the institutions were expected to focus on technical and vocational training.

The Vice Rector of the Sunyani Polytechnic, Dr K. Adinkrah Appiah, commended the President for the numerous development projects it had undertaken in the polytechnic.

Wa Polytechnic

President Mahama said following internal wrangling in the governing council of the Wa Polytechnic, he had directed the dissolution of the council and its replacement with an interim management committee.

The wrangling, among other negative developments in the polytechnic, is said to have stalled the award of certificates to graduates of the school who have completed their academic programmes.

At Berekum, the President said five kilometres of Berekum town roads were to be asphalted.

The Omanhene of Berekum urged the President to continue his good works.
