President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has given the Ghana Rugby Football Union a $100,000 boost to assist with preparations towards their 2020 international tournaments.
The President made this known when he met with the recently elected executives of the GRFA led by its President and Board Chairman, Mr Herbert Mensah.
In his opening remarks, Mr Mensah praised President Akufo-Addo for not only understanding sports better than his predecessors but also being a great champion for the cause of sports in Ghana.
Mensah also appealed to the President to get rugby officially approved as an optional sport in government schools, and to assist with allowing Ghana Rugby access to national stadia and facilities for their preparations towards flying Ghana’s flag high on the continent.
President Akufo-Addo congratulated the national squads of Ghana Rugby for their achievements and urged them to continue performing exceptionally.
The Ghana President also acknowledged the huge investments made by the GRFU President and his administration towards the development of rugby as a sport in Ghana.
Mr Mensah later presented the four continental trophies that the GRFU has won since 2017 to President Akufo-Addo.
The trophies included the 2017 Rugby Africa West Africa Regional Challenge in Ghana in (men’s fifteens), the 2018 Rugby Africa Bronze Cup (men’s fifteens), the 2019 Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens Challenge Trophy in Tunisia and the 2019 Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens Challenge Trophy in South Africa.
