Five suspected car snatchers, whose modus operandi is dismantling the vehicle after snatching it from the owner before selling the parts, have been busted.
The five were apprehended after they were purportedly in the process of dismantling two taxis at Adeiman, near Amasaman in the Greater Accra Region.
The suspects are Eric Ocansey aka Kwadwo Apoh, 22; Dickson Kumi, 29; Anthony Quaye aka Medaase, 36; Yaw Musa Osmanu, 22 and Ibrahim Adams aka White Power, 19 years of age.
The suspects, according to police reports, operated at the Swedru and Mankessim areas in the Central Region.
Briefing the media, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Accra Regional Police Commander, said on October 17, 2015, around 11pm, the Accra Regional police patrol team had information that one John the Baptist Donkor, a wielder at Adeiman, was dismantling two cabs in a very suspicious manner.
Based on the information, the police, he said, rushed to the shop and arrested Donkor.
During interrogation, Donkor mentioned one Nana Kwadwo Boakye as the person who contracted him to disassemble the vehicles.
Nana Boakye was later arrested at Apadwa in the Eastern Region and he then mentioned the others as his accomplices.
He added that they were a gang of six – including one Edward Asare aka Dibi currently at large – behind the snatching of vehicles in the Central Region.
Nana Boakye added that to avoid being arrested, they often dismantled the vehicles and sold their parts, after which the rest were sold as scraps to (scrap) dealers.
The suspects are currently in police custody assisting in investigations.
All the parts of the vehicles have been retrieved by the police and so owners will soon be invited to identify their vehicles.
