The Chaplain of the Akropong School for the Blind, Rev Ebenezer Afful Eshun, is in the custody of the police in the Eastern Region for allegedly raping a visually impaired female student.
This was after parents of the victim and some students who had complained about the conduct of the Chaplain reported the matter to the police on Thursday evening.
The suspect is said to have raped the student in one of the classrooms and some of the students captured the incident in a video.
The Eastern Regional Police PRO, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, confirmed the arrest of Rev Eshun on Accra-based radio station, Starr FM.
“The chaplain has been arrested and he is in custody. This is a public interest case and that’s why the police is looking at it. The students who chanced on the rape incident will also be invited to help with the investigation,” he said.
On Thursday, Starr FM reported that the students were angry at what they said was an attempt by the authorities to cover up the incident which occurred on Tuesday.
According to the leader of the concerned students, Richmond, some of the students managed to capture the incident on video and the victim was also able to get hold of the suspect’s boxer shots.
“When we caught the teacher sexually abusing the lady, we recorded the lady and she narrated what happened. We also got hold of the teacher’s boxer shorts which was in the classroom where the act was ongoing. We tried reporting the case to the police in Akropong but were stopped by the school authorities. We have been restricted from going out of the school.
“We are keeping the boxer shorts to use as evidence. It is interesting to note that, the teacher claims we forcefully took his boxer shorts off him and that is so not true. Other female students have complained about being sexually assaulted by some teachers but we have no evidence to that,” he said in an interview on the radio station.
