NO GHANAIAN CONFIRMED ON DEATHROW IN LIBYA – GOV’T

Government has denied reports of some 300 Ghanaians facing execution in Libya.

According to foreign affairs minister Hanna Tetteh, the reports “cannot be confirmed”.

Local media reports have suggested that the Ghanaian detainees have been in prison in a Libyan town called Pejora for the past three months, awaiting the intervention of officials from the Ghana Embassy.

The Ghanaians, according to the reports, were arrested for loitering around in town.

But, in a series of tweets, the former trades minister said the media reports on the issue do not add up.

“The concerns of Ghanaians in Libya are usually brought to the Missions attention by the Ghana Association there for Consular assistance.

“We are informed that there are four Ghanaian citizens in detention awaiting deportation, and our Staff are following up on their cases.

“However today we’ve had staff check the camps referenced & the courts to check on any cases pending against any Ghanaian citizens.

“Ghana currently has no Embassy in Tripoli, we moved our Embassy to Malta over a year ago among other reasons, due to safety concerns.

“Today, there has been a story making the rounds alleging 300 Ghanaians are awaiting execution in Libya. This cannot be confirmed,” she wrote.
