The National Association of Graduate Teachers(NAGRAT) has expressed disappointment in the Police Service for failing to arrest some six persons who allegedly assaulted a female teacher for punishing a pupil at the St. Johns primary School.
The Police had earlier issued a statement indicating that they have identified five of the suspects in the video footage that went viral on social media yet no arrest has been made.
The school has been closed down following the incident while other teachers in other schools within the enclave have also boycotted classes in solidarity to their colleague.
Commenting on the development, the President of NAGRAT, Angel Karbonu said the GES together with the Police have not shown enough commitment to get to the bottom of the matter and bring perpetrators to book.
“One week on after this incident, the Police administration is not been able to arrest the gentlemen in question and to bring those gentlemen to book according to law. Despite the fact that the police informed the public on the day of the incident that they could identify the faces of 5 of them in the whatsapp video that was making rounds in the country, we are shocked and surprise what prevents you from calling them before you to aid the investigations when the people are in your custody.
He bemoaned what he says is the bureaucratic response of the GES in the matter, wondering why they(GES) have not been robust in addressing the issue head on.
“We are asking the teachers in that circuit and indeed the whole of Gt. Accra to be very resolved and solidarize with their colleagues. this incident will definitely have to see a turning point. We expect the ministry of education and Ghana Education Service to provide security for the teachers for the teachers to be able to work in a secured environment,” he said in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM.
Teachers of the St. John’s 1 and 2 Primary and Junior High School in Accra New Town were attacked last week by some unknown group of bulky-looking young men that stormed the compound of the school to beat them up.
Student had to run helter-skelter for their lives as the heavily built men Tuesday went berserk battering anyone on sight.
It was a scene of pandemonium and utter confusion on the compound of the St John’s 1 and 2 Primary and JHS as the men dashed about the school’s compound looking for teachers to beat up after a student of the school was reportedly punished by her class teacher.
Teachers of the school have reportedly deserted the school and are clamouring for immediate transfers in the wake of the attacks.
