Several parts of Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital is in total darkness after a transformer at the Electricity Company of Ghana’s substation ‘A’ in an area called Abinkyi exploded Thursday evening.
Several wires and underground cables were affected in the explosion plunging the town into total darkness.
According to Daily View Gh’s Ashanti regional correspondent, Okyeame Yaw, the timely intervention of the Ghana National Fire Service prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the substation.
It is, however, not known what caused the explosion but officials of GNFS have disclosed that investigations would start Friday morning.
Public Relations Officer for ECG in Kumasi, Erasmus Kyere Baidu told Starr News that over 70 percent of the towns in the Garden City would experience blackouts until the transformer is replaced.
According to him, the affected underground cables must also be changed which is likely to take several days.
