A 22- year old-Junior High School student is stranded at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where she is being detained for non-payment of medical bills.
Her mother, Esther Kontoh, said she rushed Alice who was on the verge of death to the hospital about a week ago.
After eight days on admission, her bill came up to 1000 Ghana cedis which, according to her, she cannot afford.
Nhyira News has learnt the sick young woman had been living as a house-help with one Vida Osei of Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Tema.
Madam Kontoh who has six other children said she could not afford to take care of them hence her decision to allow one of them to live outside home.
She noted that five months later she had a call from an unknown person informing her about her child’s sickness in critical condition.
Madam Kontoh said she went for her daughter only to meet a hostile mistress who refused to let Alice go, insisting she was in good health.
A few days later Vida Osei dropped Alice off at the lorry station and abandoned her when her condition had deteriorated.
The distraught mother said some neighbours called to inform her about her daughter’s ordeal and she quickly rushed her to hospital.
Madam Kontoh says attempts to seek support from individuals and groups, including churches have been unsuccessful.
Hospital authorities at KATH when contacted by Nhyira News said they cannot write off Alice’s bills just on the basis of claims of inability to pay.
Meanwhile, Vida has declined comment on the issue. She tells Nhyira News she has been able to raise only 100 Ghana cedis out of the 1000 cedi needed to discharge the girl.
