President of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF), Mr Ben Nunoo Mensah has been elected onto the Executive Board of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa (WFA).

Mr Nunoo Mensah was elected last Tuesday at the ongoing WFA Congress in Algiers, Algeria.

The current board of WFA will steer the affairs of the sport on the continent for the next four years.

Speaking in an interview from Algiers, the President thanked the Almighty God for the honour done him. He also thanked the Sports Minister, Hon. Isaac Asiamah for his support and encouragement saying “when I mentioned to him about the possibility of going to stand for the position, he said it was good because it falls perfectly in line with the vision of H.E President Nana Akuffo Addo to get as many Ghanaian Sports Administrators as possible to serve on international sports bodies because he believes that can have a positive influence on the development of sports in Ghana.”

He added that the Minister through the ministry prepared a supporting and recommendation letter with a good CV on his behalf which was sent to the WFA Secretariat prior to the election.

In his speech, the President of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), Dr Tamas Ajan commended the Technical Head of GWF, Dr Kyle Pierce for his role in developing the sport in Ghana and on his achievement as the best Sports Coach in Ghana for 2016. He applauded GWF for making weightlifting as one of the fastest growing sport in Ghana and assured the country of his support.

The current Executive Board of the WFA will have;

President – Khaled Mhalhel (Libya)

Secretary General – Manareddi Eshelli (Libya)

1st Vice President – Salim Musoke (Uganda)

2nd Vice President – Kevin du Plooy (South Africa)

3rd Vice President – Abdellazziz Brahimi (Algeria)

4th Vice President – Mahmoud Mahgoub (Egypt)

5th Vice President – Mustapha Claouachi (Tunisia)

Executive Member – Ben Nunoo Mensah (Ghana)

Executive Member – Robert Rose (Seychelles)

Executive Member – Chimidi Ejiogu (Nigeria)

Executive Member – Ahmed Chahnaoui (Morocco)

Executive Member – Alex Rabdriamanarivo (Madagascar)

Meanwhile, Chairman of GWF’s medical sub-committee, Dr Akwesi Adomako was also elected to serve on the Medical Sub-Committee of WFA.

His committee will also be made up of;

Dr Kevin du Plooy (South Africa) – Chairman

Dr Akwesi Adomako (Ghana) – Member

Dr Mohammed Eraky (Egypt) – Member

Dr Mohammed Elias Latrech (Tunisia) – Member
