The Ministry of Finance has given approval for the recruitment of 500 personnel into the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), the Minister for the Interior, Mr Ambrose Dery, has disclosed.
Rationale
The minister explained that the recruitment exercise was to augment the staff strength of GIS in the provision of peace and security through the enforcement of immigration laws at the country’s borders.
He said the role of the GIS in the country was even more crucial in carrying out an open-border policy in fulfilment of the Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS) Protocol and free movement to enhance businesses among sister countries.
Advice
The minister admonished personnel to be friendly but firm, adding that they were the first line of contact in creating positive impressions about the country, “at the same time, ensuring the full application of the immigration laws to the latter.”
According to him, the government was committed to building capacity in the area of crime detection and other specialised areas.
