Ghana’s gospel music landscape continues to welcome inspiring voices, and among the emerging talents making a meaningful impact is Essi Donkor. Born on 11th November 1991 in Ekumfi Kokodo in the Central Region, Essi Donkor’s journey reflects resilience, faith, and a deep commitment to ministry through music.
Raised in a modest and disciplined environment, Essi is the fourth of six children. Her early years were shaped significantly by her mother, who took on the responsibility of raising the family following the passing of her father at a young age. This foundation not only instilled strength and determination in her but also deepened her spiritual grounding, which would later become central to her music career.
Her academic journey began at Ekumfi Kokodo D/A Primary School, followed by SABs Preparatory School in Mankessim. She continued her secondary education at Methodist Senior High School in Saltpond, where her passion for music and leadership began to take form. Essi later pursued higher education at Central University in Accra, earning her first degree, and further advanced her academic profile with a Master’s degree in Finance from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi. Her educational background reflects a blend of discipline and ambition, complementing her creative pursuits.
Essi Donkor’s introduction to music began at an early age within the church environment. Like many great gospel musicians, her talent was nurtured through active participation in church activities. Over time, she rose to become a music director and coordinator, demonstrating not only vocal ability but also leadership and organizational skills. Currently, she serves as one of the worship leaders in her church, where she continues to inspire congregations with her heartfelt ministrations.
Her transition into recorded music marks a significant milestone in her journey. On 1st July 2024, she released her debut single titled M’aseda, a song centered on gratitude and thanksgiving. The track resonated with listeners for its sincerity and spiritual depth, establishing her presence in the gospel music space. Building on that momentum, she followed up with Hallelujah, released on 1st January 2026, a song that reflects praise and reverence, further showcasing her growth as an artist and worship leader.
While still at an early stage in her mainstream music career, Essi Donkor’s trajectory suggests a promising future. With two officially released songs and several more projects reportedly in the pipeline, she is steadily building a catalogue that reflects both personal faith and a broader message of hope and devotion.
Her story stands as a testament to the power of perseverance, faith, and purpose. Balancing academic achievement with a growing music ministry, Essi Donkor represents a new generation of gospel artists who are not only talented but also grounded in values and service.
As Ghana’s gospel industry continues to evolve, voices like hers are expected to play a key role in shaping its future. Observers and listeners alike will be watching closely as she develops her craft, expands her reach, and continues to use music as a tool for inspiration and spiritual connection.
