Former president John Agyekum Kufuor has urged citizens to make positive use of their voting “power” as Ghana heads to the polls in November.

“When you’re a citizen and you are voting, know that your vote is evidence of your sovereignty as an individual,” Mr. Kufuor told journalists on the sidelines of a public lecture organized by the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) on Monday.

“If you have power to send some people to go and manage your affairs, to better your lot and you throw that power away, what do you expect?” he asked, adding: “So, we must make the right and positive use of our power”.

Mr. Kufuor, who led Ghana from 2001 to 2009 after winning two consecutive terms in office, has always been of the strong belief that the New Patriotic Party (NPP),currently the biggest opposition party in Ghana, is Ghana’s best bet as far as political leadership is concerned.

The party is currently led by Nana Akufo-Addo, who served under Mr. Kufuor as Attorney General. He is partnered by economist Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as running mate.

The three-time Akufo-Addo-Bawumia ticket is aiming at returning the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition back to the presidency after two failed attempts in 2008 and 2012.
