The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected Accra Polytechnic from the national electricity grid for its indebtedness to the company.
According to the ECG, the polytechnic is indebted to it to the tune of GHc2,750,035.17.
“We are not reconnecting the polytechnic until it pays 80 per cent of the total amount,” the Public Relations Officer of the Accra West Region of the ECG, Mr Eric Asante, told the Daily Graphic.
He said the company had been following up on the debt since the government, in 2014, gave a directive that ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) should be responsible for their debts.
“We have been following up on the debt of the polytechnic but not seeing any result and that is why we have disconnected it,” he said.
Debt scheduling
Mr Asante said there was, however, an opportunity for the polytechnic to approach the ECG for debt scheduling “which it should follow religiously, else we will go back to disconnect it again”.
He used the opportunity to appeal to MDAs owing the ECG to honour their obligations before they are disconnected.
According to him, the ECG was embarking on a exercise to recover money owed it and that all indebted customers should endeavour to start paying for the company to deliver quality services.
