A former Presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku has urged President John Dramani Mahama not to consider the petition calling for a pardon for the incarcerated Montie 3.
The former Trades and Industry Minister under the erstwhile Kufuor administration said it will be a “grave mistake” for the President to bow to unnecessary pressure from his party members.
“We need to restore dignity to the appropriate officers. If an NPP person insults the President, or any other political leader in our country, I will not encourage it. We can disagree but to get on the radio and let yourself be taken over is absolutely unacceptable,” Dr. Apraku told host of Starr Chat Bola Ray Wednesday.
The investment banker added “It cannot be the case that a judgment is given today and the President the next day invokes his Prerogative Power of Mercy. It will affect this country, our reputation, the perception about Ghana as well.
“The ramification of it in terms of investor confidence will be incredible. The President doesn’t need to do this, he must use his power for something else.”
Some supporters of the ruling party including ministers have presented a petition to the president to pardon presenter of Montie FM Salifu Maase, and his two panelists, Ako Gunn and Alistair Nelson who were jailed four months after they threatened to kill judges of the Supreme Court.
President Mahama has since forwarded the petition to the Council of State for consideration and advice.
