Roberto Di Matteo has been sacked by Aston Villa.

Villa chairman Tony Xia has decided to axe Di Matteo in the wake of their defeat at Preston on Saturday.

It comes after a disastrous start to the season and Di Matteo held talks with the Villa chief on Sunday as they negotiated his exit from the club just four months since taking charge.

The club confirmed the news in a short statement on Monday morning, Di Matteo, 46, has managed just one win in 11 games which has left Villa in relegation trouble in the Championship.

They hired him and backed him with £50m in the transfer market – including £12m strike Ross McCormack – in the hope of getting straight back into the Premier League.

But it has not worked like that and ex-Chelsea and West Brom boss Di Matteo has been left to pay the ultimate price.

Villa are drawing up a shortlist of replacements which includes Bristol City boss Lee Johnson and Huddersfield’s David Wagner who has made an impressive start to the Championship campaign.

Steve Bruce, despite being a former Birmingham manager, is understood to be keen but Villa will be concerned about whether he would be accepted by the fans.
