Demo turns violent: Police fire tear gas, arrest stubborn protesters

A demonstration by some political pressure groups turned violent after some protesters defied Police order and attempted to move to the premises of the Electoral Commission (EC) to present their petition demanding the creation of a new voters’ register.

Citi News’ Duke Opoku Mensah, who was at the scene, reported that the Police started throwing tear gas after they realised some of the protesters had branched and were heading towards the EC.

One person was injured in the process.

Though the groups had initially planned to picket at the premises of the EC and Parliament House and subsequently present their petition, the Police rejected their request after securing a restraining order from the court.

Duke Opoku Mensah, however reported that the protesters disobeyed the instructions in the process of the demonstration, and “branched to the premises of the EC.”

According to him, the move, which did not sit down well with the Police, prompted them to fire tear gas at the protesters to compel them to return.

The routes were from Obra Spot, through GCB towers on the Kwame Nkrumah Avenue to Fiasco Traffic Light, TUC, EOCO to Atta Mills High Streets and finally to Hearts of Oak.

“They were given some approved routes but along the line they had a disagreement with the EC and they decided to branch so the police regrouped… and started firing tear gas at the protesters.”
