The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya West Constituency, Nenyi George Andah, has dismissed as untrue reports that about 25 NPP polling station executive members have defected to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to him, the “defection story” is a calculated attempt by the NDC in the constituency to do politics of equalisation after two notable personalities in the NDC in the area defected to the NPP.
The former NDC Constituency Chairman, Lt Colonel Daniel Osardu (retd) and the Zongo Caucus Coordinator, Alhaji Issah Haruna, publicly defected to the NPP a few weeks ago.
The Daily Graphic published on Wednesday that 25 key polling station executive members of the NPP in the Awutu Senya West Constituency had defected to the NDC.
At a public event at Awutu Beraku last Saturday, the defectors claimed that their reason for joining the NDC was to express their displeasure at some negative actions of the parliamentary aspirant, Mr Andah and the constituency executive.
According to the leader of the group, Mr Paa Tawiah, who claims to be a polling station executive at the Bawjiase Presby Polling station, their decision to cross carpet to the NDC was due to lack of respect for them.
Sharp reaction
In a telephone interview in reaction to the defection story on Wednesday, Mr Andah dismissed the report and explained that Mr Tawiah was not a polling station executive of the NPP.
According to him, Mr Tawiah was a member of his campaign team in the run-up to the NPP parliamentary primary and was assigned to a particular area to canvass for votes for him but he (Tawiah) failed to live up to expectation.
The parliamentary aspirant noted that as a result of his ineffectiveness, he appointed another person to supervise him, which did not go down well with him, and he subsequently started working against the interest of the party.
Mr Andah mentioned that Mr Tawiah was, indeed, seen to be an NDC mole in the NPP as he regularly leaked information to the NDC; therefore, his exit would not affect the chances of the NPP.
He admitted that politics was about numbers but added that the NPP in the constituency was attracting more members.
He also gave an assurance that he was working hard to ensure that the constituency remained united behind the NPP and would be more focused to win the hearts of the electorate in the constituency.
He called on members of the party not to be disturbed by the so-called defections but work hard for the NPP to win political power in this year’s general election.
Polling station chairman
Mr Prince Kweku Ofori Ofosu, the Chairman of the Bawjiase Presby Polling Station, where Tawiah claimed to be an executive, also told the Daily Graphic that it was not true that Mr Tawiah was an executive member in that polling station and described his actions as pointing to the fact that he had been financially induced by the NDC.
