Superintendent Peter Lanchene Toobo, the ex-Executive Secretary to former Inspector-General of Police, Mr David Asante-Apeatu, has denied media reports that he has been invited by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) for interrogation in connection with his alleged involvement in a coup plot to destabilise the government.

The now-parliamentary candidate for Wa West of the main opposition National Democratic Congress, is alleged to have known about the activities of the alleged coup plotters.

Media reports on Tuesday and Wednesday indicated that he had been invited and interrogated by the BNI over the matter.

But in an interview with Kwabena Prah Jnr (The Don) on Accra100.5FM’s Ghana Yensom on Wednesday, 6 November 2019, Mr Toobo said: “I have not been invited by the BNI for any interrogation.”

Meanwhile, his party has called on the general public to disregard any news publications to the contrary.

A statement by the party’s Upper West regional arm said it “wants to make it emphatically clear that Supt Peter Toobu (Rtd) is a law-abiding citizen who has spent a considerable part of his life serving this nation diligently as an officer of the law. At no point in time within his life has he acted in aberration of the same law that he protected so diligently”.

“His love and respect for democracy and rule of law made him present himself to serve his people through the established democratic processes after resigning from the Ghana Police Service where he occupied a lofty position as Executive Secretary to the IGP for many years.

“It is, therefore, warped logic to even begin to imagine that a man who has demonstrated such magnitude of reverence for democracy and due processes could ever brood destabilising the same democracy that he has firmly committed himself to.

“We want to assure the general public that Supt Peter Toobu (Rtd) has not been picked up by any BNI operative. He has not also been invited by any security agent and is not under any investigation for any wrongdoing. He is hearty and going round his campaigns with the assurance of being duly elected by his constituents.

“We assure the general public that as a law-abiding citizen, Supt Peter Lanchene Toobu (Rtd) will avail himself of any lawful interrogation since he is very clear in his conscience that never at any point in time did he act in a manner that will compromise the security of the state or the democracy that we all celebrate.”
