Claims Mahama took $8m from Nyantakyi’s ‘friends’ concocted lies – Kofi Adams

National Organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Kofi Adams has dismissed reports that former President John Mahama received campaign contributions from persons linked to beleaguered Football Association president, Kwesi Nyantakyi.

The NDC Organiser described the report as a “lie” manufactured “for the sole purpose of sharing the profound damage done to the President and some of his lieutenants…in the Anas video.”

“No amount of concoction, no amount of subterfuge [and] no deliberate attempt to draw in former President John Dramani Mahama and NDC into this matter will save our President [Akufo-Addo] in this exposé,” Kofi Adams told Joy FM’s Kojo Yankson, Tuesday.

Kwesi Nyantakyi is reported to have claimed in his statement to the Criminal Investigations Department that a Sheikh supported the NDC’s campaign with the $8 million.

The GFA President turned himself in to the police following a complaint by President Nana Akufo-Addo on the grounds that the GFA Boss was allegedly using his name for influence peddling

Nana Akufo-Addo made the complaint after he watched excerpts of a yet-to-be premiered documentary by Anas Aremeyaw Anas, in which Mr. Nyantakyi allegedly used the president’s name to extort money from prospective investors. The investigative piece reveals alleged corruption in football and politics.

It is emerging Kwasi Nyantakyi in his statement to the police claimed former president John Mahama benefitted from donations by investor friends linked to Kwesi Nyantakyi.

But speaking Tuesday with Joy FM’s Kojo Yankson, Kofi Adams stated neither the NDC nor its candidate, John Dramani Mahama, received any amount from an unknown person.

“This lie and many desperate acts over the last few days cannot and will not exonerate President Akufo-Addo from the various acts of wanton corruption and the revelation that Nyantakyi is captured on the said tape making, including asking for various sums of money from people on his behalf,” he maintained.

2014 World Cup Commission White Paper

Kofi Adams further claimed President Akufo-Addo of deliberately forgetting to implement the White Paper issued by the previous government in the wake of the Commission of Enquiry into the 2014 World Cup fiasco.

Mr Adams said he believed the President failed to implement the White Paper because GFA Boss, Kwasi Nyantakyi is a personal friend.

The President had in a response to a question put to him during his interaction with journalists at the Flagstaff House that he had forgotten about the White Paper.

“I have forgotten about the 2014 paper…it has not been very much on my radar,” the president confessed when he was asked a question by Patrick Osei Agyemang popularly called Countryman Songo during the presidential encounter with the media at the Flagstaff House Banquet Hall.

But the NDC stalwart says the president’s action is deliberate because of the close ties he has with Nyantakyi.

“…are you surprised that the President stated at his press interaction that he has forgotten about it? Why won’t he forget? [It’s] because that is his good friend!”

He said “…if the current President [Akufo-Addo] has followed through with the White Paper that was issued by the previous administration [under Mahama], maybe we would have caught Mr Nyantakyi and his team earlier than this Anas’ video did.”

On August 4, 2014, government commissioned a three- man Committee, chaired by Justice Senyo Dzamefe, following the negative fallout from the Black Star campaign in the 2014 Brazil World Cup competition.

Established by Constitutional Instrument C.I 82 with CI 65 giving it the guidelines to operate, the Commission had Moses Foh Amoaning, a private Legal Practitioner and Kofi Anokye Owusu Darko, a Football enthusiast as the other members.
