The Canadian High Commissioner has highlighted the importance of developing amateur sports programs for children to enhance their talents.
Dr Heather Cameron said it is so exciting to see children being encouraged to participate in amateur sports in Ghana because of the benefits it beholds for their future and development.
She was speaking to Joy News in reaction to Canadian sports performance which is attracting attention the world over.
It has been a wonderful year in Sports for Canada as both the Toronto Raptors and Bianca Andreescu authored two major Canadian sports firsts within a span of only a few months.
On a late Saturday afternoon, 19-year-old Andreescu was the main topic at dinner tables in Toronto and beyond, and the talk of the country from coast to coast as she stunned tennis great Serena Williams to win the US Open.

The World No.15 beat Williams, 6-3, 7-5, to become the first Canadian Grand Slam singles champion.
In June, the Toronto Raptors became the first Canadian team to win an NBA title.
For a country with a population of about 37 million Canada has enjoyed some outsize success in sports recently.
Explaining the secret to their success High Commissioner Cameron said sports is really important to Canada and so over the years they have concentrated on developing amateur sports to encourage their citizens.
“We have amateur sports programs that encourage Canadians to adopt healthy lifestyles…we have many different amateur leagues and in terms of high-performance sports, the Canadian government provides supports to the athletes,” she said.
She added that government creates opportunities for such athletes through the participation in events like the Commonwealth games to gain international experience representing their country.
Speaking on their involvement in sports development in Ghana, she said, “We are very pleased to support Right to Play and their work in Ghana using sports to teach young students learn new skills to develop leadership, teamwork and using fun games to learn and reinforce some basic education concepts for younger students.”
The Canadian High Commissioner in Ghana says people should watch out for Canada in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
