Medeama SC began their CAF confederation Cup Group stage campaign on a disappointing note following a 3-1 defeat at TP Mazembe on Sunday.
Midfielder Malik Akowuah raced the Ghanaian side in front in less than 1 minute with a powerful strike from 20 yards after receiving a pass from left-back Moses Sarpong.
TP Mazembe pressed forward in search for the equalizer and seemed to have rewarded them with a goal after Rainford Kalaba slotted in a strike into the top left corner of the post after receiving a low pass from Ghanaian international Solomon Asante only for the center referee to ask for the kick to be re-taken.
The Congolese Champions got the match-needed equalizer in the 15th minute after Zambian international Rainford Kalaba headed in a cross from the right hand side of attack.
Poor defensive work from the Medeama defence saw them concede the second goal late in the game after tall lanky Salif Coulibaly pounded on a loose ball to score Mazembe’s second late in the first half.
The host got a cushioning in the 68th minute, thanks to a brilliant strike by Kalaba who registered his second on the day.
Kalaba took on Medeama right-back Daniel Addo and curled in from the edge of the box after spotting Medeama goalkeeper Muntari Tagoe off his line to ensure the former Champions maintained their impressive home record.
Medeama’s next match will be against MO Bejaia at the Sekondi Sports Stadium on 29 June.
