A private legal practitioner, Yaw Oppong says the arrest of the Managing Director of a quarry company, Marbles and Granites on the orders of the National Security Advisor is an abuse of power.

According to him, the police should have caused the arrest of  Dr. Edmund Ayo Ani and arraigned him before court if they believe he has indeed committed a crime and not allow the BNI to take charge since the case is a civil one.

National Security Advisor Baba Kamara had accused Dr. Edmund Ayo Ani of circulating pictures of Mahendra cars being branded with NDC colours in his yard at Spintex, next to the Granite and Marbles company, on social media.

The said vehicles, numbering about 50, were reportedly meant for the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) but have been allegedly diverted to the NDC.

According to the BNI, the angles from which the pictures were taken indicate they were taken from the office of the Director of Marbles and Granites.

The vehicles have since been moved under police escort in the middle of the night to an undisclosed location.

The National security Advisor has confirmed to the media that he ordered the arrest, insisting it was not right for Dr. Ayo to take pictures of vehicles in his yard and post them on social media.

Though Dr Ayo Ani has since been freed by the BNI, lawyer Yaw Oppong believes the arrest and detention by the BNI is an abuse of power.

‘Yes, the security is there to protect us as a country but they have actually infringed on the person’s right because that is not how to handle a citizen of the country. I think they have erred” he insisted.
