Belgium call-up Ghana target Jérémy Doku

Anderlecht star Jérémy Doku has received a maiden call-up to the Belgium national team.

Doku’s call-up to the Red Devils of Belgium comes just days after the 18-year-old of Ghanaian descent reportedly asked Ghana coach CK Akonnor for time to decide whether to play for Ghana or Belgium.

The tricky teenage star has already represented Belgium at U-15, U-16, U-17 and U-21 level. He has made three appearances and recorded a goal and an assist each in the 2020/2021 Jupiler Pro League.

The player was among some seven European-born Ghanaian footballers that Akonnor had targeted for a nationality switch to represent Ghana at international level.

However, Belgium coach Roberto Martinez appears to have beaten his opposite number to the punch.

    Hunt for Doku

Akonnor’s hunt for the winger stretches back to February this year when he visited the talented player as part of a European tour.

The speedy winger is one of the most sought-after prospects in Belgian football and has already represented the European nation at all age levels.

In a recent interview with Sportsworldghana, the player said he needed more time to decide on whether to play for Ghana or not.

“I have made it clear to him (Akonnor) I need time to make the right decision,” Doku said.
