Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan has announced that he will host a five-nation Under-16 Tournament between August 27-September 3 targeted at reviving the fortunes of grassroots football in the country.
The tournament organised by Babyjet Promotions will take place at the Asamoah Gyan Sports Centre located on the campus of the Accra Academy Senior High School and will feature 16 teams from Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, Ivory Coast and Togo.
Commenting about the tournament is separate posts on Twitter, Gyan explained that it was time to harness the abundance of football talents to produce superstars like himself, Stephen Appiah and Michael Essien.
He posted: “Ghana has talent in abundance, it’s about time we harness & develop these talents into world class superstars like we did to produce @MichaelEssien @asamoah_gyan3 #StephenAppiah …”
Gyan, 32, said this can only be achieved if there is a return to the fundamentals of grassroots football (juvenile/colts football) which produced such quality players.
“We can only do it well if we bring back the good old days of football made in Ghana which started from grassroots football ( Juvenile / Colts football ). I invite corporate Ghana to come support this initiative to start the agenda to help bring back grassroots football to the level it deserves.
“Come 27th August to 3rd September at te Asamoah Gyan Sports Centre, Accra Academy all the 16 teams will converge at the games village (Accraca) to compete among themselves for the best to be crowned Champions”.
