Akuffo-Addo defends NPP’S call for new voters register

The 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has begun his nationwide tour in the Volta Region, with a call on party supporters and members in the region not to see the call for a new voters register as a tribal and discriminatory campaign.

Rather, he urged them to rally behind the NPP and Ghanaians who were campaigning for the change of register and see the call as being in the interest of the entire nation.
“Some people have tried to dismiss our call for a new voters register by describing the

campaign as discriminatory because the party is against the people of the Volta Region.

“We’re not talking about Ghanaians in this campaign; we’re talking about foreigners whose names are found in our voters register. We’re saying that Ghana’s election is for Ghanaians; it is not for West Africans,” he said.

Position reaffirmed

Nana Akufo-Addo, who made the call when he arrived in Anloga yesterday on his “Arise and Build” tour, further reaffirmed his decision to ensure that the nation had a ‘credible’ voters register.

He cited some countries in the world that had either reviewed or replaced their voters register due to the problems or challenges they encountered

“Recently, the President, John Dramani Mahama, requested that Togo acquire a new voters register before its general election. So he must lead the same crusade in Ghana. What is good for Togo and other countries is equally good for Ghana,” he stressed.

The NPP presidential candidate further noted that the party had no hidden agenda in its call and would never give in until the proper thing was done in the interest of the nation.

Cracks in the party

Touching on recent cracks in the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo stated that the party would remain resolute in resolving and mending the challenges it was encountering.

Even though he could not give definite steps that would be taken to heal the wounds, he said he was hopeful that everything would come to an end soon.

“Problems do occur at each time, but they are resolved. As a party, we’ll ensure that all these are resolved,” he stressed.

Arise and Build tour

The leader of the NPP is in the Volta Region to begin his “Arise and Build” tour of the nation.
While in the region, Nana Akufo-Addo is expected to meet defeated candidates in the party’s parliamentary primaries and constituency and regional executives of the party to strategise on winning many votes in the region.

He is also expected to state his vision and policies for the people of the region when voted into power in 2016.

He is expected to tour the Ketu North and South, as well as the Ho and Hohoe, constituencies.
