The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has roundly condemned the burning of the party’s voters register at the Atebubu Amantin constituency in the Brong Ahafo region.
According to the party, it will not countenance such unruly and criminal acts by any party member and will allow the law to deal with the culprits.
Branch Executives in the Atebubu Amantin constituency on Thursday burnt their voters register after a scuffle over allegations that the register had been bloated.
The officers had been given the register to cross-check the list of names in the electoral album. They alleged that upon their scrutiny of the document they realized that it contained the names of several NPP members, which they suspected was a calculated move by the DCE for the area, Hon Sampson Owusu Boateng who is contesting the incumbent MP Sanja Nanja to unseat him.
The agitated officers reportedly took the register and lit fire nearby and burnt the document.
However reacting to the issues, the First Vice National Chairman of the NDC, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo said the party has launched an investigation into the incident and will not hesitate to hand the culprits to the police.
“The NDC voters register though belongs to the party, is a public document that is why the Electoral Commission is always invited to conduct election. It is totally unacceptable for anyone no matter the provocation to destroy the register. We’ve asked our regional director of elections to probe the matter and we’ll take the issue up after the investigations”.
The NDC is expected to go for its Parliamentary and Presidential Primaries on November 7 to elect its Candidates for the 2016 general elections.
