The Consumer Protection Agency(CPA) has advocated for the Flagstaff House to be moved onto the prepaid metering system to ensure the seat of government also pays for the utility it consumes.
Executive Director of the Agency, Kofi Kapito says if Mahama is imploring Ghanaians to brace themselves for higher tariffs, then none should be left out of the bracket as well to pay tariffs that will help resolve the country’s current energy woes.
President John Dramani Mahama says an increase in utility tariffs is critical if Ghanaians want reliable power supply.
President Mahama explained that the country is shifting from hydro energy to thermal energy which is more expensive to produce hence the need to pay more for power.
But Kapito, has called for equity in the system and also rule out protocols that usually see government and its offices exempted from paying for the usage of electricity and water.
Speaking in an interview with Citi FM, he says it’s necessary for the system to share the cost of energy consumption fairly.
“What the President has said is unfortunate-The flagstaff should also pay for their utility just as the white house is also paying bills,” he adds.
Meanwhile, Deputy Communications Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu has defended the President’s position on the matter, saying he’d intended to make a call for frank discussions, since the utility service providers needed the financial muscle to ensure their financial viability.
