The Accra Regional Police Command have arrested two persons for attempting to transport ninety (90) compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be indian hemp to Nigeria.
They are Mustapha Mohammed, 34, a trader and Stephen Gbafe, 52, a private security operative a native of Akatsi in the Volta Region.
The Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Yohuno, in an interation with journalists in Accra Wednesday narrated how the two suspects were arrested.
According to him, on October 4, 2015, at about 6:30am Mustapha Mohammed went to ABC Transport Services Terminal at Caprice with two (2) travelling bags to secure his travelling ticket to Nigeria.
During Mustapha Mohammed ‘s pre-departure formalities, the porter in charge of the terminal opened the first bag and found twenty eight (28) parcels of suspected Indian hemp concealed in the bag.
The porter again opened the second bag in the presence of the suspect, Mustapha Mohammed and it also contained twenty (20) parcels concealed in the second bag.
Mustapha was then quickly handed over to the Police with the exhibits.
According to the Regional Police Commander, Mustapha upon interrogation stated that one Osman from Techiman in the Brong Ahafo Region gave him the substances.
DCOP Yohuno added that on October 4, 2015 at about 5:40pm, the police patrol team in their normal duties in and around Agbogbloshie area had a tip-off that, two men were on board a taxi cab with a fertilizer sack containing compressed parcels also suspected to be Indian hemp and heading towards the Spintex Road.
The patrol team, he noted, acted swiftly and intercepted the taxi cab on the Kanda Highway. After searching the vehicle, the Police retrieved forty two (42) parcels of compressed dried leaves concealed in a fertilizer sack.
Stephen Gbafe, who was arrested claimed ownership of the exhibits but told the police that it was his son Courage Gbafa who sent it to him from Hohoe in the Volta Region.
He said the police has intensified its efforts and investigations into the matter to get Courage Gbafe arrested.
