Fire destroys a portion of the Kaneshie market – Video

A section of the Kaneshie Central Market in Accra was destroyed by fire.

The outbreak happened at dawn with several wares feared to have been lost to the inferno. This is the first time in years for this prime market to catch fire – considering the tight safety protocol and market surveillance there.

Visuals from the market captured the inferno on top of one of the tall buildings within the enclave as witnesses throng the premises.

The cause of the fire remains unclear, but some traders suspect foul play and have called on the authorities to investigate the circumstances that caused the latest disaster in the market.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), however, arrived on time to bring the situation under control.

This comes just days after the famous Katamanto market in Accra was also razed down by a raging fire.

Another fire outbreak was earlier reported at the Asankragwa Main Market in the Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region which razed down four stalls and other properties worth thousands of cedis on Friday night.

The Kaneshi markets Limited is a trading centre in Kaneshie, Accra, Ghana. It was built in the 1970s. The name “Kaneshie” means “under the lamp” referring to its beginnings as a night market.
